Oscars®: Foreign Language And Short Film Entries Due Monday

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced yesterday that Monday, October 3rd, is the deadline to submit entries in the Live Action Short Film, Animated Short Film and Foreign Language Film categories in order to be considered for the 84th Academy Awards®.

Complete entries must arrive at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by 5 p.m. PT, Monday. In the Foreign Language Film category filmmakers must submit entry forms, one English-language subtitled film print or copy in an approved digital format, and all other required materials by the deadline.  Only one motion picture will be accepted from each country.

Also a Feature Length Motion Picture is now defined as being over forty minutes in length. That minimum definition was originally at least 90 minutes in length, which was lowered to at least 75, and now is down to 40 minutes.

In the short film categories, filmmakers must submit an entry form, one film print or copy in an approved digital format and all other required materials by the deadline. The categories for short films are: Best Animated Short Film, and Best Live Action Short Film. A short film is defined as being  an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits.

The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood and Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Lists of Short Films in Oscar® Competition

There are now 10 live action short films that will advance in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' voting process for the 83rd Academy Awards®. Seventy-six pictures originally qualified in the category.

Also, 10 animated short films will advance in the voting process. Thirty-three pictures originally qualified in the category.

The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all the eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting in screenings held in New York and Los Angeles.

The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select three to five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist. Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco in January 2011.

The 83rd Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

10 Live Action Short Films Advance in Oscar® Race



10 out of the 71 originally qualifying live action short films have advanced in the voting process in the Live Action Shorts category for the 82nd Academy Awards®.

The 10 films are listed below in alphabetical order by title, with their director:

Hotel by Tim Conrad.
Instead of Abracadabra by Patrik Eklund.
Kavi by Gregg Helvey.
Miracle Fish by Luke Doolan.

The Response by Adam Rodgers.
Short Term 12 by Destin Daniel Cretton.

Oscar® Entries Deadline for Foreign Language, and Shot Films

The Best Foreign Language Film submission deadline for possible Oscar® nomination is Wednesday, 1 October 2008. It is also the deadline for Live Action Short Film and Animated Short Film.

Entry forms for consideration for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination for the 81st Academy Awards®, along with documentaion and one English-subtitled film print, and all other required materials, must be at the Academy in Beverly Hills by 5:00 p.m., 1 October. Only one entry per country.

The Academy mailed entry forms to 95 countries in June. Last year, the Academy invited 93 countries to submit. Of those who submitted, films from 61 countries were qualified for nomination.

In the short film categories, filmmakers must submit an entry form, one film print, or copy in an approved digital format, and all other required materials by the same deadline.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2008 will be presented on Sunday, 22 February 2009, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, Hollywood, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.
